Numerous studies have now confirmed that there is a direct link between a person’s calcium intake and their body fat percentage. The results of most of these studies suggest an inverse relationship; the higher a person’s calcium intake, the lower their level of body fat.

There are two pertinent facts behind calcium’s amazing effect on fat loss. The first relates to the source of the dietary calcium; a high-calcium intake from dairy protein appears to be the most effect source of calcium that helps to enhance fat loss and prevent body fat accumulation.

The second aspect pertains to the action of dairy calcium on vitamin D in fat cells. The active form of vitamin D, called calcitriol, influences fat accumulation in fat cells. calcitriol activity increases when dietary calcium intake is low. Therefore, people that do not consume a high calcium intake have fat cells that accumulate fat much easier than those who consume a high dairy calcium diet. In contrast, diets that are high in dairy calcium suppress calcitriol activity. In turn, this promotes better metabolism of fat. For these reasons, bodybuilders should always keep their dairy protein intake high. This simple strategy switches off calcitriol production that reduces fat accumulation and enhances fat utilization for energy.
