When people hear the term “antioxidant,” they often think in terms of a specific nutrient like vitamin C. Now while vitamin C is an antioxidant, the term antioxidant is actually a generic description for anything that can neutralize unstable molecules that damage DNA, cell membranes, and other parts of cells. These “unstable molecules” are sometimes called “free radicals” or, if they include oxygen atoms (which they often do), “reactive oxygen species.” When nitrogen instead of oxygen atoms are present, the term is “reactive nitrogen species.”

Free radicals do their damage by robbing other molecules of electrons. Electron give-and-take among molecules is an essential part of normal biochemistry. However, sometimes, more accurately, constantly, molecules get shortchanged and leaves these exchanges shy of their full and stabilizing complement of electrons. This “radicalizes” the molecule and sets it on a destructive course of thieving electrons from other molecules. And this is where the damage occurs.

In chemistry, taking electrons in this way is called oxidation, and the compounds that do so are called pro-oxidants or sometimes simply oxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that placate pro-oxidants by yielding some of their electrons and stopping the oxidation. For your body’s well-being, it’s better to have, say, a vitamin C or E molecule make this sacrifice than a critical protein, a gene, or cell membrane.
