Hey, this is going to put a smile on your dial. A recent study by Dr. Andrea Ghiselli and colleagues demonstrated that moderate consumption of beer increases the body's life-extending and disease preventing antioxidant levels. It appears it's the combination of the ingredients in beer with it's alcohol content is what imparts the positive effects. You see the alcohol is necessary to obtain the health effects as it helps free up the active components in beer called phenolics. This study showed that beer consumption in moderation prevents free radical damage without overloading the body with alcohol.
While physicians are now aware that alcohol in moderation provides health benefits, many have tended to steer their patients towards wine rather than beer. However studies reveal that the antioxidant content of beer is equal to wine, but the antioxidant are slightly different because the barley and hops used in the production of beer contain flavonoids different to those found in the grapes used to make wine.
While these findings are no permissive license to drink to excess, the physicians in this study quote moderate drinking as 2 drinks per day for males. I thought it was only one drink, but hell who am I to argue with good doctors?
