A cool head means better performance.

Most active people understand that intense exercise increases body temperature, now a study has shown that intense exercise also increases the temperature of the brain. Researchers in Denmark have revealed that letting the brain get to hot during physical activity can hinder coordination, judgment and movement and even damage brain cells. Essentially, by allowing your body temperature to climb too high during exercise can literally cook your brain!

This research revealed that the brain is always at least 0.4 degrees (F) hotter than body temperature. Even while exercising in an air conditioned facility, body temperatures can top 104 degrees (F). Therefore, taking steps to keep a cool head while exercising in the summer months is important.

The first step is obviously to maintain hydration at all times by consuming water and sports drinks before, during and after exercise. A hydrated body performs better and cools quicker.

Secondly, remember that thirst is not an indication of dehydration. By the time you actually feel thirsty it’s too late, you’re already dehydrated.

Thirdly, don’t impede the body’s cooling process during exercise. Don’t wear plastic suits, do wear light fabric, loose clothing and ditch the beanie caps! When you’re exercising in 85 degree-plus temperatures, they look stupid and they’re dangerous (the beanie hats that is!)
